A great weekend on tap including two favorites and a NEW VENUE! Please support these local venues that support live music. Hope to see you 😉

What a first trip to Asheville! @laila_asheville was our first stop for dinner. The first star of the night was a delicious mocktail prepared for Jamie by a very sweet bartender who was excited to be given creative license.

The star of the meal at @laila_asheville was the curried butternut squash soup. Really, really good.

#asheville stole our hearts in many ways. The views from the #blueridgeparkway alone were worth the 6.5 hour drive.

Pretty sure these are the bears we ran into on the #cravengaptrail and we will never forget them. Grateful they gave us a photo op later. Mama let us know she was close with cubs in the woods, and we hightailed it back. She issued a warning at which point her cubs would go up a tree and she would stand guard, and we respectfully gave her space. This old man has wheels. I knew Jamie was ok because I could hear her behind me 🤣

#asheville sky across the street from @lazoom where we had an awesome comedy ghost tour with some very talented comedians and imrpov artists. This was a good few hours before the edges of what was left of Isaias rolled in.

Celiac-friendly breakfast at @greensagecafe including delicious baked goods. The bowls were delicious and healthful, and the cinnamon-bun bread was awesome.

@posanarestaurant is a MUST DO in #ashevillenc for any meal. Completely gluten-free kitchen, and sober-friendly drink menu. Salt-roasted beets with blood orange gastrique, black walnut, tarragon, and gf cheddar biscuits. Did not miss the gluten one bit.

Dinner at @posanarestaurant included ricotta gnocchi with lobster and bucatini with tomato sugo, shrimp, broccoli rabe, mascarpone, Calabrian chili, Parmesan. All GF.

Dessert at @posanarestaurant was a black currant cherry chocolate cake and pecan pie cheesecake. Again, all GF. The only thing better than the food was the service. I told them it was Jamie’s birthday and they brought a card, a special toast (N/A sparkling rose’ for me) and a bite care of the chef.

Oh, @biscuitheadavl - how I love you. GF biscuit with egg and cheese and a side of savory grits with peppers and cheese for Jamie. Buttermilk biscuit, fried chicken, pimento cheese, bacon, scrambled eggs smothered in g

It takes a very special woman to come into the life of a widowed man and choose to try and stand with him. There is a hole in my world where there was once a whole. I have stood alongside it for over 3 years while my tears just ran into it. Someone wonderful has chosen to take the love that will always flow from my eyes and show it to me. Someone who’s willing to hold my hand and look into the canyon in my life and learn about it, and maybe help me learn about it, too. My life for over 3 years has been very introspective and quite mostly about my kids, my music, and my grief. A really great woman has decided to prove there is room for another tree in my heart and that the tree Kara and I built still stands, lives and provides shelter. Jamie is funny, smart, supportive, an easy hang, generous. She meshes well my sobriety, my writing and performing, my healthful lifestyle and my sweet tooth, is a huge music fan, and likes to travel. I’ve got another Wordle, Connections, Spelling Bee and Crossword Buddy. My kids deeply enjoy her and she has developed a special friendship with my mom. She loves me, and she has made a place for me to love her. She points out where Kara shows up in both our lives, which is pretty selfless. Today is her birthday. Please tell her happy birthday 💗 @argento_futbolmadre @themattyd692

I just got the amazing device in this box from @elliottcapos and I’m left wondering where the hell they’ve been all my life. 40 years of playing guitar and this is hands down the best capo I’ve ever used, and I got it because I wanted whatever wondrous device I saw @jasonisbell using. I haven’t been this excited about new gear in a minute. More to come.

I flat out stole this photo. I like it for all the wrong reasons. Even in a very good place in life, art, family, and a new relationship, this image strikes at the loneliness that comes to those of us who’ve survived losing someone to breast cancer. We try to drop the what-if’s and shoulda’s and move on in the light of our loved ones instead of the shadow cast by their being taken from us, but it’s always empty. More for some than others, different empty for different folks, but the empty elephant is there in the room.

If you know me then you either knew Kara or you know who she is. She would endorse my continuing to talk about this month on her behalf, and my commitment to be an advocate in whatever way I can. I can bore you for hours with statistics. Instead, I just say this with my whole chest:

Please, for the love of all you hold dear, get your mammograms.

Learn to be your advocate when something isn’t right, keep pressing for answers, ask your experienced friends for advice, and get your mammograms. I will drive you, I will help you pay for it. But get your mammograms. Kara had no family history or genetic pointers for breast cancer. Get your mammograms. #getsquished #breastcancerswareness #pinkoctober

We’re coming up on #breastcancerawarenessmonth in honor of a disease I wish I didn’t know so much about. A reminder that you need to get your mammograms, and I’m here if you need a ride or help paying for it. Here’s some shows for the fun side of things.

Hey, back at the grind and as Irish-tanned as ever! Who’s ready to sing along?

As of this post, you guys raised $7059.54 for The Kate Rhoades Pediatric Oncology Patient Support Fund at INOVA through Kara’s Day. I want you to know that this fund means real, honest help for families whose young children are receiving treatment for cancer. In a country with this much wealth, it’s an absolute abomination that families have to figure out how to pay regular bills while their baby is in cancer treatment, or how to cover the insane medication costs, or how to get to the hospital for treatment. It shouldn’t be reality, but it is. So… these are just a few examples of how The Kate Rhoades Pediatric Oncology Patient Support Fund steps in for families. You guys made a difference in the name and love of Kara. Yes. More of this. Happy birthday, Bay.

The online auction for Kara’s Day 3 is now live (link in bio), and the event is ON for this Sunday, 9/20 at @sinistralbrewingcompany in Manassas. All proceeds from this year’s event will benefit The Kate Rhoades Pediatric Oncology Patient Support Fund at INOVA. We will have a day full of pizza, beer (N/A also), music with @longestdayoftheyearmusic and @yachtrockpartyevents, and love and hugs. There may be some items added but the auction is now live, and you are also able to donate directly if you’d prefer not to bid. Please check it out!
